Learning and Loving Music through Flute Playing

Sue Garton, Teacher

Looking Ahead to Fall

Despite rising costs just about everywhere, tuition at FluteKeys will remain the same for the 2008/2009 school year.

I meet with students during the summer--when they are not vacationing or visiting relatives or attending a summer music camp. Fluting efforts for the summer make a big difference in skill level and audition results in the fall.

Schedule: I will be teaching through August 5, out for one week, and will resume teaching on August 12.

Consider the flute choir option for the fall. Last year we were able to develop many musical skills in the flute choirs that cannot be accomplished during private lessons and band. Plus, we were able to read through and give rewarding performances of fine pieces in many different performance sites.

News Flash: The studio has just acquired something new, especially for the flute choirs: an Eb soprano flute. This is smaller and higher pitched than the C flute we all play, but not as small as a piccolo. Ask about it when you come to the studio.

National Flute Conventions

As an active member of the National Flute Association (www.nfaonline.org) I attend their national conventions each August. This year I was in Kansas City, MO. where I met and heard several great flute musicians that I have mentioned during private and group sessions.

trevorandsueIn 2007 I was in Albuquerque. Here I am with Trevor Wye, author of several method books for flute that I use and recommend.

In 2006 I attended the national 2006 convention in Pittsburgh and performed in the NFA flute choir. While there I heard wonderful flute ensembles and tried out some big flutes like the huge contrabass flute in the picture at right. As you can see, it is way taller than I am!
